Seminole County Brakes for Turtles…

Seminole County's slogan is "Seminole County... The Natural Choice"   Along with nature comes wildlife and there is a lot of wildlife here, from the deer that roam along the Wekiva Preserve to the Sandhill Cranes that fly overhead, the abundant wildlife is all around us.

Seminole County TurtleI was driving down Lake Emma Road in Lake Mary this past week when I saw everyone on the roadway coming to a stop ahead of me.  I was worried that there had been an accident, but I saw a man was in the middle of the road reaching down to grab something.  As I came to a stop I could see that he was picking up a turtle that had made its way into traffic.  In our faced paced world someone stopping traffic would usually result in honking or words being exchanged for that moment of inconvenience. Not this time, other drivers were keeping traffic from proceeding to protect not only the turtle, but the man who wanted to save him.

I was truly left with a sense of pride that our residents care so much about our "other neighbors" the ones without voices.  Before we knew it, we were all on our way again, including the turtle... He proceeded slowly towards his Seminole County home, just like me.

Debbie~ It is nice to see people caring enough to stop and save a helpless turtle while crossing the street....  Does anybody even help little old ladies across the street anymore???

Vickie, I sure hope so! I think sometimes we need to slowdown and see how we can all help each other.

I think in my 18 years of living in Lake Mary between my mom and I, I can remember saving at least 8 turtles out of the road. Most of them off of Lake Emma. It is nice to see how many people do care.

Heather, The last turtle I picked up off of SR 46 in East Seminole County peed on me, but it was worth it, he was sure to be run over on this highway.  Thanks for taking the time to comment.

So how big was this turtle?  I hate when I see them smashed on the roadways.  We have a lot of turtles here too.  We have a small lake (oversized pond) near our home and find these giant turtles trying to cross the road.  I've never picked them up, but I respect their space.

That is great - it makes me smile !!! Is great to see the world that day not be frenetic and in a rush, but rather being part of nature per se and protecting life.  A few months ago, my wife and I were driving through Newtown (a beautiful city outside of Philly) and there was a family of ducks crossing the road... was beautiful... just thinking about it makes me smile more... a great way to start a day !  Thank you !

La$hawn - I love turtles...  They always make me think about slowing down and enjoying life...  I found this little guy while I was walking through a neighborhood in Boca Grande, FL...  Oh, I found my dream house there too... right on the beach.  Ahhh,

Hi Debbie, cute story.  When we have the turtles here crossing the street it's when the rains have swollen the creeks to overflowing onto the roads!  We just have the Deer, squirrels (tons of 'em) and O'Possums during the drier times.  -- John

Debbie - Just watch out for the snappers aroud here we approach the bigger turtles with great care they can move very quickly at close range and do not let go.

Cute story and good pictures too.  Sometimes the green sea turtles try to cross the road in one area here, but there are volunteers watching out for them when it's egg laying season.

I have a friend that lives off Markham Woods Road.  He gets to see turkeys, bears, wild boars, deer, and more that come into his yard.  Pretty cool.

Reminds me of the story where I was helping a family of ducks here trying to get them to go toward the creek instead of toward the highway. Sometimes nature just needs a little help.
